Shanghai is a world leader in brain–computer interface (BCI) surgery — technology that lets people move, communicate and control devices with their thoughts.

A real case, in Shanghai. In 2025, surgeons at Huashan Hospital (Fudan University) performed China's first invasive BCI implant on a man who had lost all four limbs 13 years earlier. Within 2–3 weeks he could control a computer, play chess and racing games with his mind alone.

In 2026, China approved NEO, a Shanghai-developed coin-sized implant, as the world's first invasive BCI cleared for use beyond clinical trials, helping people with spinal-cord paralysis regain hand movement.
